Tire Track Eel (Mastacembelus armatus)

Named for the intricate, dark maze-like pattern along its body, the Tire Track Eel is a secretive and powerful freshwater spiny eel species. While not a true eel, it exhibits similar behavior—burrowing, hiding, and emerging to feed, often at night. It's intelligent and can form bonds with keepers over time.

Size: Up to 30 inches (76 cm), usually 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) in captivity
Tank Size: Minimum 100 gallons
Care Level: Advanced
Diet: Carnivore – frozen or live bloodworms, shrimp, earthworms, and sinking meaty foods
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; will eat small fish
Compatibility: Best with medium to large, peaceful tankmates
Notes: Needs soft, sandy substrate and tight-fitting lids (excellent escape artist); prefers dim lighting and plenty of hiding spaces like driftwood and caves.
