Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus)
The Convict Tang is a distinctive surgeonfish named for its pale whitish-gray body marked with six vertical black stripes, resembling a classic prison uniform. Native to the Indo-Pacific, it is commonly found in large, active schools across shallow reef flats, lagoons, and surge zones. Unlike many tangs, it is more peaceful and highly social, often engaging in group grazing behavior. As an herbivore, it plays a key role in maintaining reef health by controlling turf algae and promoting coral growth. Its hardiness, active behavior, and relatively peaceful nature make it a great choice for larger community reef tanks.
Size: Up to 8 inches (20 cm)
